Venturing out into the unknown might seem daunting, but with the right preparation and awareness, the world can be your oyster. You can be a safe solo traveler, and this post, part two, will give handy trips and tricks to ensure that your solo travel journey is not only transformative but also safe and sound.

Preparation is Your Best Friend
- Choose destinations known for their safety, and research local customs and laws. Opt for places with lower crime rates and friendly locals.
- Book your accommodation in well-reviewed, reputable, and safe areas. Hotels or guesthouses with 24-hour front desks are often a safer choice.
- Plan your itinerary well, including transportation, and share it with a trusted person at home.
Health Precautions
- Visit a travel clinic for any necessary vaccinations and discuss any health concerns with your healthcare provider before you leave.
- Keep a stock of necessary medications, along with a copy of your prescriptions.
- Every hotel has connections to a doctor or pharmacy if you find yourself unwell.
Traveling
- Purchase comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and loss or theft of belongings.
- AirTags are amazing!! Put one in each suitcase and even in your purse or backpack if you carry one.
Stay Connected
- Share your travel itinerary, accommodation details, and copies of your important documents with a trusted friend or family member BEFORE YOU LEAVE.
- Regularly check-in with someone back home and keep them updated on your whereabouts and plans. I used to post a daily “proof of life” picture to a group chat.
- Have local emergency numbers saved in your phone and know the locations of the nearest embassy/consulate and reputable medical facilities.
Technology
- Utilize safety apps that share your location with trusted contacts and have emergency SOS features.
- Offline maps and translation apps can be invaluable in navigating unfamiliar places safely.
- Never forget the power of a paper map! My technology crashed at inconvenient times.
- On your Home Screen, create a folder with all of your important travel apps so they can be easily found at a moments notice.
Transportation
- Use reputable and licensed taxi services or rideshare apps.
- Avoid unlicensed cabs.
- If renting a car, ensure it’s from a reputable company, and always have a map or GPS device handy.
- If using a ride share app, check the last four digits of the license plate against what is stated on the app.
Personal Safety and Awareness
- Be aware of your surroundings, stay in well-populated areas, and avoid risky areas especially after dark.
- Carry personal safety devices like a whistle or a personal alarm.
- Keep your money, passport, and valuables secure and avoid displaying signs of wealth.
- Use hotel safes and carry only what you need for the day.
- Always trust your gut. If something feels off, remove yourself from the situation.
Ways to Explore
- Consider joining group tours for certain activities or parts of your trip. It’s a way to meet people and explore in a safe, structured environment.
- Consider taking a self-defense workshop or a basic survival and safety course before your trip.
- Dress modestly and respect local customs. Many churches and holy sites require shoulders and knees to be covered. A scarf in your bag can be a lifesaver.
I took a month this summer and explored Europe, and I used all of the tips I shared with you. Some days were planned, but I always allowed for flexibility. I traveled with a friend who got sick. I took Ubers to castles. I walked with locals. AND I carried a scarf in the sweltering heat so that I could see all of the amazing medieval churches that I happened upon without offending anyone.
By being well-prepared and maintaining a vigilant yet adventurous attitude, you can tackle the challenges of solo travel and embark on a rewarding journey of self-discovery and empowerment.
Remember, you can do this, and as always, I’m here to help.
